"The nature of mind is unmoving and clear, it is unchanging. It is also the unceasing source of all happiness and positive qualities. In the meditation exercises and practices taught in awakening the sacred body seminar, we are moving the clouds that obscure the sky of the natural mind with the wind of our breath, uncovering a more subtle awareness that recognizes the nature of mind, the source of being. We all have this source within us; it is simply obscured by our thoughts and afflicting emotions. So it is only by habit that we do not recognize the source within us. We are distracted. While it seems that all humans seek peace and happiness, we constantly look outside ourselves for this fulfillment, trying to secure our peace and happiness in conditions that cannot, by their very nature, be relied upon and that will inevitably change. This change causes further insecurity and dissatisfaction. We go after what changes and fail to recognize the deep and abiding inner space of being that never changes. The wisdom teachings of Bon work with three opportunities, or doors to liberation from suffering: body, speech and mind. In this seminar we will focus upon the door of the body. In order to attain liberation through the door of the body, we must focus on releasing the winds that support the karmic conceptual pain body and connect with the subtle internal winds of the changeless essence body, the subtle winds that support the recognition of the natural mind. As we explore working with the internal winds, it is my sincere hope that you will find much medicine for your life."

According to the ancient Tibetan spiritual traditions, our planet is alive and sacred; and the five elements of earth, water, fire, air, and space are not just natural resources but can be considered fundamental aspects of a living universe. In fact, every experience one can have, from the sensations of one’s physical body, to the emotions, to the most fleeting of thoughts, is said to be composed entirely of these five elements in interaction.

By bringing the five elements into balance, we contribute to our own well-being as well as the health of our planet:

ACCORDING TO SHAMANIC TEACHINGS, on a physical level, the ongoing destruction and pollution of our global environment can be said to provoke the spirits of nature, causing wide-scale disease, energy disturbances, and mental obstacles to arise. By harmonizing with the natural elements, we harmonize our relationship with these spirits.

ACCORDING TO TANTRIC TEACHINGS, on an energetic level, the raw elements of nature represent subtler, more fundamental aspects of the primordial energy of existence. As such, the five elements play an essential role in emotional and psychological healing. For example, too much earth element can make us feel dull, drowsy, or lazy; but when earth is balanced in us it supports us to feel connected, secure, and confident.

ACCORDING TO DZOGCHEN TEACHINGS, on the level of mind, retrieving and connecting with the elemental essences can support the practice of contemplative meditation. For example, the water element brings comfort and joy to experiences of open awareness; when fully developed in spiritual practice, it is mirror-like wisdom.
